Throughout my time as a student, Microsoft Word have proven to be extremely helpful. During high school and middle school, I would use MS Word to type up essays, do some homework assignments, and take notes on readings outside of class. Now in college, I use MS Word for taking in-class notes, writing essays, keeping a schedule of homework assignments, and for doing work. As I mentioned before, I came from a very low technology school system. The first time I saw a teacher consistently use MS Word as a tool was in ninth grade when my history teacher displayed his notes using the application every single day. He would later post these notes on our school website so we could review if necessary. I found this method to be extremely useful and I have been a fan of online notes ever since.
In all honestly, copyright and fair use of materials in an educational environment is not something that came up often in my classrooms. Although we did discuss plagiarism and how to cite works, I was also taught that the textbook and online resources should be used as a resource. Also, I think it is assumed that a teacher would use outside sources while creating notes as no individual knows that much information off the top of their head. I found this podcast to be helpful as it made me rethink the importance of credibility and citations. As a teacher, I would always cite my sources at the end of my presentations and impress on my students the importance of citations as well. I would also have a lesson about citations as I never had a formal one myself and just learned through experience.
Although technology is a beneficial classroom tool, it comes with several drawbacks. In Chapter 11, these drawbacks were discussed in great detail. One implementation issue was the potential of cyberbullying. In my opinion, a possible solution would be to require that students sign a form at the beginning of the year that states if they treat another student with disrespect online they will face suspension or other consequences. If there are severe consequences for cyberbullying, I believe that there will be less of a chance for its occurrence. Another implementation issue is that of copyright. In my personal experience, copyright and plagiarism tends to be on accident. Most students plagiarize simply because they were never taught how to properly cite. Therefore, the solution to this problem is easy- to have a lesson on credibility. In this lesson, students will learn how to cite a source, when citations are applicable, and about the importance of citations. The final implementation issue is hacking and malware. As technology advances, so does software that is made to protect it. Although some hacking problems are unavoidable, by having up-to-date protection services you can avoid most problems. For example, Norton is a great software that takes just minutes to download. Even though technology has some drawbacks, it definitely has more benefits that can be very useful to all students in classrooms.
