The ELA technology standards state what students of varying grade levels should know about computers. While some of these standards were familiar to me, others I had never heard of. Three ELA technology standards I felt prepared to teach were "text structure:" informational text, "use multiple sources," and "use technology." These standards are ones that I have had practice on prior to this class and for this reason I feel more comfortable with them. Three standards that I need more practice on are "vocabulary: use context clues," "use digital media," and "multimedia:" science/technical subjects. Unlike the previous three standards, I have not had practice with these. Therefore, in order to teach them, I would definitely require more experience.
Throughout chapter 9, several technological applications were discussed. Some of the technological applications I thought would be helpful in a classroom were email, discussion groups, and learning management systems. In my opinion, email provides an easy and simplified way to communicate with all students. Also, email saves paper, clarifies the assignments due, and allows students to email the teacher for questions if need be. Discussion groups enable students to communicate with each other and share their ideas which can help them learn. When I was in high school, we had an online learning management system. Personally, I thought it was very effective if teachers made use of it. Even though most teachers didn't use it, the teachers that did kept the class organized through it which I appreciated. Since I most likely want to be a first or second grade teacher, the students will probably not use much of technology. However, I would still be sure to go over the digital citizenship guidelines such as how to participate on the web, how to behave properly on the web, and how to protect yourself on the web.
I found the Newsletter Design Assignment to be fun. After this assignment, I understand how hard it actually is to make a newsletter and share information with an entire class and the parents. Although it was enjoyable, it took a lot of effort and hard work to perfect the format. I found it especially hard to make the newsletter look nice without it being too extravagant and distracting. However, it is a good skill to learn and practice as I know I will definitely need it in the future in my own classroom.
